Does Acupuncture Help For Golfers Elbow

--

Despite its name, more than 90% of patients diagnosed with golfer’s elbow didn’t get their injury playing sports — most developed the problem due to repetitive wrist movements on the job. No matter how your golfer’s elbow occurred.

Golfers Elbow Q & A

What is golfer’s elbow?

Golfer’s elbow develops from repetitive activities that strain the muscles in your forearm responsible for flexing your wrist. As a result, the stress causes small tears and inflammation in the tendon that attaches the muscle to your elbow.

When you have golfer’s elbow, called medial epicondylitis, the damaged tendon is on the inside of the elbow. Golfer’s elbow is closely associated with tennis elbow, which is a similar injury except the injured tendon is on the outer side of the elbow.

While gripping and swinging a golf club is the best-known cause of medial epicondylitis, any activity that repeatedly makes the same movement can result in an injured tendon. For example, using backhand when playing tennis, improper pitching technique, and repetitive movements in the fields of construction, plumbing, and carpentry can all lead to golfer’s elbow.

What symptoms develop due to golfer’s elbow?

The symptoms usually develop gradually, as the inflammation and tearing worsens. You’ll eventually experience symptoms such as:

  • Pain on the inner side of your elbow that may extend down your arm
  • Pain when gripping or squeezing an object
  • Elbow stiffness
  • Weakness in your hand and wrist
  • Numbness or tingling that radiates into your fingers

As the condition progresses, you may develop a weak grip.

How is golfer’s elbow treated?

It’s important to rest the muscle to give the tendon time to heal. However, clinical studies have shown that acupuncture effectively treats golfer’s elbow, relieving your pain and promoting natural healing.

As an expert in acupuncture, Vonda knows several techniques that she customizes to best meet each patient’s treatment needs. In addition to traditional acupuncture, she also provides the balance method, which uses different acupuncture points to achieve faster pain relief compared to the traditional method.

Acupuncture activates your body’s natural healing ability by restoring the free flow of energy, called Qi, through your body. Qi follows specific pathways, called meridians, that maintain a healthy balance in your body, allowing all your organs and systems to communicate and work together.

When a meridian is blocked, you develop pain and disease. When Vonda places acupuncture needles in precise acupuncture points along the meridians, the blocked energy is released and your body can heal. The needles also stimulate the release of neurotransmitters and endorphins that alleviate pain.
